Translating silence and memory

Observing the visual arts through an intimate vantage point, the Lopez Museum and Library ushers in its 2017 exhibition calendar with Pauses of Possibility. The upcoming exhibition presents pieces birthed out of personal narratives or moments of quiet, amplified, and translated into large-scale works and tangible sculptural pieces.  Marina Cruz, Kara de Dios, Elaine Navas and Pam Yan Santos create memory-stills and fragments of introspection. These seemingly ordinary canvases overflow with cloth, flowers, and cabinets carry telling narratives of their makers.

What is the fate of art that speaks of specific narratives, situated in time and memory, and then bared to the public for viewing and interpretation?  Pauses of Possibility brings into light works that arrest moments of seemingly mundane silence, confronting the audience with their own interpretations. Remembrance becomes a shared experience; the diaristic is invaded by attempts to discuss: the public struggling to empathize and recollect a memory that was never theirs.

Supplementing the works of the guest artists are pieces by Romeo Tabuena, and Macario Vitalis. Intimate archival materials drawn from the institution’s Rizaliana collection will be put on display alongside works by Juan Luna and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo. Taking the Lopez Museum and Library’s collection of works by Nena Saguil, the exhibition further looks into the tendency to locate a connection between the life of the artist and the works she creates.

Pauses of Possibility features works illustrating instances of struggle and release: the artist making tangible personal memory, and moments of quiet and introspection. The exhibition’s inadvertent challenge for the viewer is to resist the demand for instant gratification that comes from understanding the work and its maker from a single glance. In the current reactive state of the world, the public-self often wins over the weight of empathy, contemplation and even necessary pauses.

Pauses of Possibility opens to the public on 20 February and runs until 17 June 2017. For more information about the exhibit and the services of the Lopez Museum and Library, call (02) 631 2417 or email
