QUERIDA? What’s in a name? Mistress, kabit, Number 2, kalaguyo, other woman, kalunya, girl friend, lover, live-in, kaapid, kaagulo, patiki, inamorata, concubine, kaliwa, kasaroan, sambay, swe-i, kept woman, back-street, kulasisi, kamalala, lugud, sesay, sandil, babayeng agalon, puyupuyo. Her male counterpart may be called boylet, querido, boy toy, take-home, lalaki, kulukadidang, loverboy, and boy friend, but querida is often, simply, that woman, babae, babaye, bii.

Up until Valentine’s Day, we will feature excerpts and memes from this gorgeous book, and collections of the Lopez Library. For now we leave to inspire your Monday with this remixed verse by Shakespeare,

“O, emoji not by the moon, the inconstant moon,
With your prepaid text in her circled orb,
Lest that thy love prove likewise variable.”

inspired by Juliet, from Romeo and Juliet
