Ninety six delegates from all over the country are going to the four-day Zero In workshop on Establishing Community Museums to be held at the Faber Hall of the Ateneo de Manila University from September 17 to 20, 2013. The workshop is a project of the Zero In museum consortium and supported by UNESCO. The aim is to help cultural organizations, local government units, and non-government organizations set up museums in their communities specifically in the provinces, and make it sustainable.

Ethel Villafranca, Lopez Museum’s education and administration head, said, “Unfortunately our country is not a museum-going society. It is our hope that our fellow Filipinos will have more interesting museums to go to outside Metro Manila, and be encouraged to visit these museums often. Perhaps then they will find value in museums as places where they can learn and appreciate their own heritage.”

Workshop participants will gain specific museum skills and techniques such as: determining objects for acquisition, creating catalog entries, developing exhibition concepts, writing exhibition labels, creating education programs and activities as well as marketing and fundraising for the museum.

Zero In is a consortium of premier private museums in the Philippines – these are, Ateneo Art Gallery, Ayala Museum, Bahay Tsinoy, Lopez Memorial Museum and Library, and Museo Pambata. Established in 2001, Zero In has focused on the strengths of each member museum and have launched programs to engage more people to appreciate culture and arts.

In its 12th year, Zero In continues to operate on this mandate with a workshop that will definitely strengthen museum appreciation in the country. For more information contact Lorraine at (0915) 903-8005 (632) or email zeroinmuseums@gmail.com
