On November 16, 8am-5pm, representatives from the National Museum of the Philippines’ Archaeology Division – Amalia de la Torre, Alfredo Orongo, Bobby Orillaneda, and Mauro Alvarez – will give a general introduction to ceramics(types, terminology, process) and discuss manufacture, construction and finishing and surface treatment of pottery, glazing of Chinese ceramics, and conservation of ceramics from underwater sites. Research into the Philipppines’ past has involved looking into pottery and ceramics. Many such samples are in private and museum collections with varying levels of accessibility to the public. While most display excellent preservation in archaeological contexts as stated by Ms Amalia de la Torre of the National Museum, these materials also deteriorate and are damaged. With a better understanding of the materials that embody aspects of our precolonial past, improved means of caring for this tangible cultural heritage can be established. Fee of Php1,500.00 includes lunch and snacks.
The Lopez Memorial Museum is at the ground floor, Benpres Building, Exchange Road corner Meralco Avenue, Pasig City. Museum days and hours are Mondays-Saturdays, 8am-5pm, except holidays.
