On February 23, Wednesday, from 8am-5pm, the Lopez Memorial Museum, in cooperation with the FIDA and CITC, will hold a refresher course on fiber and paper. The course is geared towards helping those who work with fiber and paper either as artists, conservators, collections managers, etc. get a better grasp of the materials they will be making marks on, conserving, displaying, etc. The morning session will focus on Philippine tropical fibers used for textiles, classification of fibers and principles of fiber identification, and deterioration factors and preventive measures in the field and in museums. The history of paper, varieties of paper and techniques of papermaking and their effects will be the topics for the afternoon session. Fee of Php1,000 covers morning and afternoon snacks only.
Representatives of FIDA include Mr Edilberto Castillo whose specializations are morphological and anatomical analysis of plant fibers and fiber identification, Dr Remedios Abgona on plant diseases and fiber production and mechanization, and Mr Julio Ferrera on fiber grading and classification. Mr Loreto Apilado of CITC has been training extensively on paper, book binding and book repair here and abroad. He has given lecture and workshops on these also.
